Namal hits back at Bimal over Southern Expressway claim

Colombo, June 20 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has accused Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake of misleading Parliament following the latter’s remarks about alleged irregularities in the construction of the Southern Expressway.

In a post on social media platform X, Rajapaksa expressed his disappointment over what he termed "false narratives" aimed at discrediting the Rajapaksa family.

"It is disappointing to see Minister @BimalRathnayake misleading Parliament with false narratives just to spread hatred towards the Rajapaksas, a narrative they have been using to cover up their failures," Rajapaksa stated.

The response came after Minister Rathnayake, addressing Parliament today, claimed that certain sections of the Southern Expressway were constructed to benefit residents linked to powerful politicians in the then-government.

He suggested that some expressway access points had been built to serve personal interests rather than public need.

Countering this, Rajapaksa clarified that the land on which the Southern Expressway service station currently stands was leased by the Road Development Authority to Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation — both government-owned entities.

He added that the service station continues to serve its intended purpose, catering to thousands of expressway users daily.
