Namal demands fair trial, says crucial documents withheld

Colombo, Sept. 26 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who has been indicted in connection with the alleged Krrish deal, raised concerns today over the prosecution’s failure to provide several documents requested by the defence to ensure a fair trial.

President’s Counsel Sampath Mendis, appearing for Namal Rajapaksa, informed court that the prosecution had not handed over a number of documents sought by the defence, reiterating that these were crucial for a fair trial.

In response, Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera, appearing for the Attorney General told court that the prosecution had already provided several of the requested documents to the defence. He further assured that the remaining documents would be handed over after inquiries are made from the CID.

Meanwhile, Colombo High Court Judge Nadee Aparna Suwandurugoda directed the Registrar of the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court to submit the original case proceedings related to this incident to the High Court.

The case was fixed for pre-trial conference on December 18.

The Attorney General had filed criminal proceedings before the High Court against Namal Rajapaksa over the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 70 million belonging to Krrish Company.

The indictments were filed before the Colombo High Court by the Attorney General, alleging the misappropriation of Rs. 70 million provided by the Indian real estate company Krrish Lanka Pvt. Ltd. for the development of rugby in Sri Lanka.

The prosecution alleged that Krish Lanka Pvt. Ltd had granted Rs. 70 million for the development of rugby in Sri Lanka.

Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe had lodged a complaint in 2015 regarding this incident alleging that the money granted by Krish Company had been misappropriated by the accused without utilising them for the real purpose of the company.
