Colombo, August 24 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa today accused the government of engaging in political revenge to cover up its failures and attempting to dismantle state machinery.
Addressing the media, Rajapaksa claimed that what the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) failed to achieve in 1988 and 1989, it is now attempting to carry out while in power, thereby undermining the state within the democratic framework.
He reiterated that the SLPP had consistently highlighted the issue of political victimisation and alleged that the current administration was once again demonstrating its incompetence.
“The worst instances of political revenge in this country were suffered by former Presidents Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Mahinda Rajapaksa,” he said.
“We have tried to prevent such actions at every opportunity, but the government continues to pursue them instead of addressing the real issues facing the people.”
Rajapaksa further said that his party was firmly opposed to any dismantling of the state, whether inside or outside the democratic framework.
“The government must stop this revenge. Instead of taking revenge, it should fulfill the promises made to the people. When the promises cannot be fulfilled, the government takes revenge,” he added.
