Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - Amidst the Government Medical Officers’ Association's (GMOA) trade union action, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday warned that doctors' Trade Union has no right to unduly interfere in the activities of the Health Ministry claiming that they must focus on trade union activities.
He told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions that doctors' Trade Union had intervened in all the Ministry activities such as preparing transfer list, recruitment process in the past.
"The Health Ministry is doing Ministry activities. Let Trade Union focus on Trade Union activities. The doctor's trade union has so far unnecessarily interfered in the Ministry activities. They had even allocated a room in the Ministry with some four to six doctors assigned there. They cannot do so," he said.
The Minister said there have been no illegal transfers adding that 6,000 doctors will be transferred by May 10 under annual transfers claiming that no regular transfers have taken place for the last 13 years.
He said the doctors who had used their powers in the trade union and executive committee were staging protests stating that most doctors approve the current transfer method.
The Minister said difficult station list of 265 was prepared in consultation with Regional Director of Health Services and Provincial Director of Health Services based on the seven criteria of the Health Ministry. "Preparing the difficult station list is the duty of the Ministry. Trade Union has no role in it," he said.
He said doctors' trade union cannot intervene in all the Ministry activities just because they represent the transfer board. "They can only look into and interfere if any of their trade union members have been subjected to injustice in the transfer method," he said.
The Minister requested the doctors' not to resort to token strike at a time when there is a war and country is facing an energy crisis.
