Nalin Hewage says bank savings are ‘money for daughter’

Colombo,Sep.20 (Daily Mirror) - Deputy Minister of Vocational Education, Nalin Hewage clarified recent reports on his assets, stressing that his bank deposits include funds gifted to his daughter.

“I saw reports stating I have about Rs. 2.2 million in bank accounts and a land valued at Rs. 2.4 million. I wanted to clarify this,” Hewage said.

He explained that the money in his accounts partly consists of contributions received during a function for his daughter on January 1.

“People had given money for this, and I have records of who gave how much. The money I have in the bank is my daughter’s money, and anyone can verify this if needed,” he added.

Furthermore, Hewage pointed out that his land was purchased before he entered politics.

“We are not beggars. I completed a degree and worked as a government teacher. During that time, I bought this 10-perch land,” he stressed.

If the original source of assets are legitimate and properly accountable, nobody could point fingers at owners as corrupt. People could be rich or poor; it is not a discriminator for determining if a person is a socialist or a capitalist. The affinity comes from the heart, and not from the size of assets. The issue in question is that hitherto, until the advent of NPP government, especially after Jayawardena changed the constitution, he and all politicians that held a significant role in governance after him turned out to be corrupt and had been diverting government assets to their private accounts.

It is sad to note that millions of money have being robbed by politicians who ruled this country , keeping them out completely the media loves to dig in to the assets of NPP politicians which looks very ugly.

It is sad that the NPP Politicians who declared their assets are targetted now to explain. At least 95% of them are first timers and all assets declared have been acquired before they entered politics. So no robbed assets. What the opposition and some you tubers want is NPP members not have any considerable wealth.

Why should a member of the government in this country who has become wealthy through honest means have to justify himself to opposition crooks? It was a mistake for Nalin Hewage to get involved in a dispute about this in the first place. It would have been best to ignore this.

The present government MP's do not have to give explanations about their assets, they were not in government office. They have earned their assets rightfully on their own merits and most of them are qualified professionals or had their assets coming from family lineage. What's been questioned, are about the corrupt politicians and their immediate families and friends who were in government and how they acquired their wealth ?

This asset declaration is a farse If there are ill gotten assets, some could be transferred to family members. A good example is Ravi Katunayake. I think his assets are declared as approximately 200 million. He is a business man, the suggestion that he had got a apartment from Perpetual it self must be worth 100 million. So, Ravi Katunayake's assets must be much more valuable.

There's nothing wrong in accumulating wealth in a honest manner. What these Ministers have is not extraordinary. But what irks the people is how they pretended to be beggars, lying through their teeth about how they had to borrow from their party members and neighbors to live. They PRETENDED TO BE POOR, and that my dear NPP friends is downright lying and and NOT ACCEPTABLE. Please don't excuse them for every misdeed no matter how much a fan you are of the NPP. This only goes to show what hypocrites they are and that they will do and say anything to stay in power. Beware, their two faced ideology is clear. If you want them to remain in power, point out their wrong, instead of whitewashing their shameful deeds.
