Colombo, Jan 19 (Daily Mirror) - The National People's Power (NPP) was not expecting to legalize prostitution and that it would only amend some laws which inconvenience those who were forced to prostitution due to economic hardships, NPP MP Harini Amarasuriya said today.
She told the Daily Mirror that the main focus of the NPP was to revive the economy of the country as economic hardships had forced women into prostitution.
The MP said women who were forced to prostitution had to face numerous hardships due to some laws and that the NPP would amend such laws to minimize such situations and to protect the rights of the women.
She said sex workers who were subjected to exploitation were further harassed due to some laws.
Referring to media reports on a claim made by NPP member Samanmalee Gunasinghe over legalizing prostitution, Amarasuriya said legalizing prostitution is only a popular topic and that media had only highlighted a part of her speech adding that her complete comment carries the correct idea.

NPP is not going to be in power, so what is the need for this explanation? By the way, NPP can talk arranging protest 5 days a week, that is something they are good at. NPP can also talk about setting up training centers to teach how to protest in a most disturbing way for useless things.

Simply legalise prostitution. Don’t try to show to the world this country Sri Lanka is a saintly country, whiter than white. New Zealand, Holland and many other countries have legalised this profession that had been there even during the time of Jesus Christ. The NPP is trying to tinker the laws to fool the people. The 6.9 will fall for it.

Harini attempting to soften the exposure made by her party member as if prostitution is legalised they are likely to lose a section of votes

well said lady, Social media allied to those who have governed this country after Independence is spreading lies, distorting information as they see the rapid emergence of NPP as the party which leads the opinion poll for the presidential election which is due in this year.

Looks already some miscommunication within the party. If you want people to be confident voting your party in, get the basics correct like only a top official like you making policy comments. That’s happening now

Making laws soft on prostitution is like some kind of legalising it. Legal or illegal, some women are going to be choosing prostitution not only due to economic issues but also to maintain their luxury life style as this profession can earn easy tax free money.

Prostitution, how ever way you toss it, is a social impediment and a life long curse on those who are forced to it. It forms an irrevocable barrier with the rest of the society. The offsprings of a prostitute await a lifetime sentence of degradation and untouchability. NPP should (and they might) set up a program of regeneration for women who are into prostitution and to those on the brink, through increasing the employability. This can be in the form of skills development, retraining, interest free but accountable financial support, assistance with child care, small businesses/crafts/handicrafts etc. Why should a woman have to rent her body for a man just to survive for her and her kids?

JVP's ugly Avtar NPP is trying to engage in indecent activities to further demoralized the country. Instead of finding solutions to economic issues.
VJ Saturday, 20 January 2024 09:36 AM
Legal or not, you or anyone else will not be able to stop it in this country. Sending our women to work as maids in another country is the same. In both cases it is done by sighting poverty as the reason. There are organized gangs who exploit poor people into prostitution. The police provide them protection for a fee. This is not limited to women. Similarly, can you ban the use of alcohol or tobacco in this country? Soon people will start filing fundamental rights petition claiming it is their right to sell what they have.

Never raise the issue or discuss any sensitive issues on open forum!! Opponents quick to misinterprete on that!?

This must be a fact and is a damn disgrace mainly on the part of the politicians who have consciously put these women into this situation by making many lives very difficult with women and children the main victims. This is unforgivable, and should be corrected immediately.
Mohamed Marzook Saturday, 20 January 2024 02:57 PM
Words used sometimes distort actual view. Harini is correcting that distortion in this matter.

NPP's duty is actually supplying Ganika services to the whatever government comes into power for their survival. Who doesn't know it?
Tissa Fernando Sunday, 21 January 2024 04:50 AM
So far , I have heard two ways of raising money to revive Sri Lanka economy by NPP, one is Anura saying that he could sell grapphite to the world and now Harini saying they will somewhat remove legal barriers for the prostitution. I think the next item will be Marijwana.
DOT Sunday, 21 January 2024 01:30 PM
Why Not?
Terrence K Monday, 22 January 2024 06:58 AM
Harini do not try to bluff the public by trying to go around the subject of legalizing prostitution which has gone viral. Do not have a forked tongue by saying that laws will be amended to those who have been in prostitution for many reasons. Whenever a decision is taken it should be straight forward without any ambiguity as most politicians have earned accolades for telling something but do the opposite!!!!!!!
Observer Monday, 22 January 2024 07:10 AM
In my view the prostitution is already legalized in Sri Lanka. When you hang on in Colombo clubs and five star hotels , you get in touch with Madagascar, Myanmar , Ukrainian, Russian escort girls . In down south specifically Ukrainian prostitutes , they practice scott free with Colombo buisness guys. May be it’s not legalized for local girls.
