More witnesses ready to testify on Batalanda incident: Tilvin

Colombo, March 17 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that there are more witnesses to testify on the Batalanda incident, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said today if the evidence is produced, not only former President Ranil Wickremesinghe but others who were involved in the incident will have to face legal consequences.

He told reporters after signing the NPP nominations at the JVP headquarters this morning that Ranil Wickremesinghe did not reject allegations against him even during his recent statement on the Batalanda Commission report.

He said the Batalanda Commission was appointed during the former President Chandrika Bandaranaike government.

Silva said so many people who were tortured in the camp, witnesses and even police officers are ready to testify apart from the witnesses in the commission report.

He said the government will proceed with the action against the Batalanda incident despite various criticisms.

"There are two types of accusations. The Ranil faction alleges that it is a mudslinging campaign while the other faction says the government will not punish Ranil. That will never happen. But, we will not sling mud or take revenge. We will only implement the law," he said.

Try and bring witnesses for the last stages of 2009 and say that VP was tortured. For sure the international community would love it. Maybe you can get your ex ranaviru politburo guys to say that the army tortured the ltte. (Similar to what you say that happened at batalanda)

While investigating the atrocities committed by the then government, the inquiry should also examine those carried out by the JVP. The JVP/NPP appears to believe they can conveniently brush aside their militant past and present themselves as virtuous. However, they too have blood on their hands. Figures like Tilvin remain part of this establishment. A crucial question the JVP has consistently avoided is whether they have truly acknowledged and repented for their past actions—otherwise, it would be a case of people in glass houses throwing stones. Meanwhile, those who were misled into voting for this government are beginning to realize that despite being in power for over 100 days, they have accomplished little beyond capitalizing on the work of their long-time rival, RW, and his team. Instead of addressing pressing issues, they are diverting public attention with non-critical matters.
