Colombo, July 24 (Daily Mirror) - The Wildlife Conservation Department has intensified its operations to seize illegal firearms used by poachers and individuals targeting wild animals, including elephants.
Officials said that these firearms are often recovered based on tip-offs from the public. Many of the weapons are homemade and used by farmers to protect crops from wild animals, though they are sometimes used for illegal hunting.
In response, the department has increased its daily patrols. So far this year, officers have seized 36 illegal firearms and taken legal action against those involved.
The department urges the public to report any information about illegal firearm makers or users by calling the wildlife emergency hotline at 1992.
