More COVID deaths due to long-term non-communicable diseases: Dr. Kumarapeli

Highest percentage of COVID deaths occurred due to long-term non-communicable diseases and it has been found that the virus had spread among all age groups, Consultant Community Physician and Non-Communicable Diseases Director Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli said.

She told the Daily Mirror that 75% of the COVID deaths reported so far among people aged 60 and above and most of them had been suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments, long term respiratory disorders, kidney diseases and cancers.

More than 80% of the COVID deaths were reported among people aged between 30 and 60 due to similar types of diseases, she said.

Considering the current situation, special attention of the health ministry was drawn on the people who are  suffering from non communicable diseases.

Accordingly, the Ministry was advised to conduct medical clinics for patients with non communicable diseases and to conduct Mobile clinics in isolated areas to deliver essential drugs, Dr. Kumarapeli said.

"The health service officials attached to the nearest hospital in the isolated areas will conduct the mobile clinics under the instructions of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in the area," she said.

Procedures are in place to provide relevant drugs for patients for more than two months on the recommendations of the doctors.

"It is essential to keep the non communicable diseases under control.
A special programme was initiated to extend health facilities to the patients who are immobile," she said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
