Colombo, June 12 (Daily Mirror) - A mistaken phone call that led to an illicit affair has ended in a conviction, as Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali today sentenced the Chief Incumbent of Sandagala Viharaya in Rajanganaya to six months of simple imprisonment for circulating nude photographs and videos of a married woman with whom he had developed a romantic relationship.

The Magistrate also imposed a fine of Rs. 2,500 and ordered the monk to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation to the victim.

According to court proceedings, the monk initially came into contact with the woman through a mistakenly dialed phone call. Later, during a pilgrimage to Anuradhapura with the woman and her husband, the monk provided lodging for the couple at the temple. Over time, a romantic relationship developed between the monk and the woman. They allegedly met at hotels, the woman’s residence, and other locations, with the monk dressed in civilian clothing.

When the woman attempted to end the affair, the monk reportedly refused and began circulating explicit photos and videos of them together to her husband and relatives. The woman subsequently filed a complaint with the Computer Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), prompting an investigation.

CID officers testified that the monk had stored multiple explicit files on a secondary mobile device, which he used to share the material. The investigation also confirmed that the monk was a properly ordained member of the clergy with valid monastic credentials.

The suspect was arrested on June 6 and produced before court. During a prior hearing, his lawyer stated that the monk admitted guilt, and he was released on bail. Formal charges were later filed under Section 345 of the Penal Code (Sexual Harassment) and the Obscene Publications Ordinance.
