Colombo, March 29 (Daily Mirror) - A number of MoUs (Memoranda of Understanding) related to defence, energy connectivity and digitization will be signed during the upcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka, an official said yesterday.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Indian Prime Minister would visit Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6. He is expected to arrive in the country in the evening of April 4.
Mr. Misri served in Sri Lanka as the Deputy High commissioner once.
He, along with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, will witness the groundbreaking of the Sampur solar energy project which has been in the pipeline for a long time, According to Mr. Misri, the Indian Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with the President. He will also meet other political leaders.
Prime Minister Modi will also travel to Anuradhapura where he will attend religious observances at Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi which was cited by Mr. Misri as a symbol of historic ties between the two countries. In Anuradhapura, he will also inaugurate some India–funded projects.
India extended financial assistance worth US $ 4.5 billion during the economic crisis.

Similarly people can have different opinions on things and that right also should be respected. They should not be called derogatory terms like ‘stooges’. Unfortunately the NPP/JVP has split the country into two camps. Those who support them and those who oppose. They forgive the misdeeds of them and their supporters (shortages of essentials due to neglect and incompetence, YouTuber activists who gets involved in suspicious fund collection activities, telling untruths and trying to claim undue credit for whatever the good their predecessors did etc. On the other hand they go out on silencing their opponents as if on a mission and issuing ‘lists’ to take attention away from their misdeeds, mistakes and incompetence. We believe in a better country for all. We don’t want a country that goes on a vengeance with democratic change of government like in some of our Asian neighbours e.g. jailing their previous leaders. We want the rule of law to be applied equally, independently and automatically without fear or favour of the government in power. That’s how it happens in developed countries. That’s a country where it’s a pleasure to live in!

In true democracies governments are not elected for 10, 15 years. They change hands somewhat frequently but basic policies remain more or less the same with a fixed framework. People governing change but country stays on course towards more and more prosperity by correcting past mistakes and adding better policies and new capable people. It’s very dangerous to have the same people governing forever. That creates a fertile ground for dictatorships, corruption and turmoil. We have seen this happening many times in our country and must learn from them.

While in India I witnessed the language row in Tamil Nadu , this looks like a tinder box that could explode soon. But make sure a similar situation is not created in your country.

Saman, it is definitely in favour of India to exert control on Sri Lanka. Slowly you will start seeing all employment opportunities going to Indians too. But when we go outside Sri Lanka to western countries, people call us Indians too because of our familiarity in looks.

@Saman, when visiting Melbourne, Australia, a Lebanese family was living on one side of the house I was staying in and an Indian family on the other side. The young somewhat intellectually challenged lebanese lad from the Lebanese family told my friend who like me hails from our 2500 year civilisation that he had a wonderful time with our maids when he recently visited Lebanon. The lad said to me that my friend said that the maids are not from Sri Lanka they are from India. So this lad tells me he brags about his experiences with the now ‘Indian maids’ to the Indian neighbour. When he saw me outside he came confused and said that Indian neighbour told him the maids are not Indians they are Sri Lankans. We have a difficulty in taking ownership that we have descended into a country that exports its women for exploitation.

When loans are called financial assistance, everyone getting loans are getting financial assistance. More like this is a puff piece for India, while belittling our nation. Only reason we have to kowtow to India is fear of Invasion, otherwise they are no different to in value to Europeans whom we actually make exports to. We hardly can do exports to India, and everything in India should be imported so public can have price assistance in terms of cheaper prices.

If SL is smart it will grab the Mody visit opportunity to secure short and mid term funding to meet urgent survival requirement. And long terms financial and technical commitment to build infrastructure projects so the the nation remains viable. But for the elite will have to come down to earth. They will have to discard their white western attitude and smell the grass. The world has moved ahead since 50's when Sri Lanka elite used to think of themselves as some sort of western white. That gave birth to the word "Coconut” So the coconuts and their offspring will have to be humble enough to accept the ground reality and accept that India is the only nation that has stood by and helped in times of needs

I didn't vote for NPP, but I appreciate that this government is now successfully implementing development projects previously blocked by NPP-led trade unions, without any protests from them. If this had happened under the previous government, there would have been significant protests and trade union actions. I like this government because they are not implementing what they promised during their campaign. It's a good move.
