Ministerial committee on education council holds first meeting

Colombo, August 30 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministerial Committee appointed to establish the proposed Education Council convened its first meeting yesterday (29) at the Education Ministry.

The committee was appointed in line with the Government’s Policy Statement, with the aim of enhancing the overall quality of education. The session was attended by Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Education and Higher Education Deputy Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, and the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on the Establishment of the Education Council Chairman Mahinda Jayasinghe.

Committee Chairman Professor O. G. Dayaratne presented details on the committee’s future activities and confirmed that a comprehensive report outlining the scope, powers, and membership of the proposed council would soon be submitted to the Minister.

Representatives of the National Education Council and the Public Service Commission were also present. The meeting included further discussions on addressing potential challenges in establishing and implementing the Education Council.

I would like to bring to your attention considered a successful education system currently being implemented in countries such as India and, to some extent, the UK. In both India and the UK, children typically begin formal schooling at the age of 4 and complete 12 years of school education by the age of 16. After this, students progress to undergraduate studies, and many complete postgraduate degrees, including Ph.D. programs, by the age of 25. In India in particular, a significant number of young people are completing doctoral studies at a relatively young age, contributing their expertise to the nation’s development early in life. Now many Indian universities shift to a four-year undergraduate degree structure instead of there. In contrast, in our current system, students remain in school until the age of 18 or 19, and only complete their undergraduate degrees by the age of 27 or 28.

You can revise the school curriculum, but the ultimate objective of school education is to produce an orderly or ethical society. However, keeping young people in school until the age of 18 or 19 does not necessarily equip them with the skills needed to face competitive challenges, both locally and internationally. This is a serious issue that requires urgent attention. We must provide high-level opportunities for the youth of our country to prepare them for the real-world demands and global competition. It is hoped that the experts will recognize the seriousness of this issue and treat it as a top priority."
