Minister witnesses minor blast, Questions lack of safety gear

Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake witnessed a minor explosion during an inspection tour of the Ratmalana railway yard today, drawing attention to serious safety concerns faced by workers.

The incident occurred while maintenance work was underway in a train compartment, resulting in a small fire. Workers on site acted swiftly to extinguish the flames before they could spread further.

Following the incident, Minister Rathnayake spoke directly with the workers and raised immediate concerns about their safety. He questioned whether proper protective equipment had been issued.

“Are there no safety shoes? Or are you not wearing them out of laziness? Or have you not been provided with such equipment at all?” the Minister asked.

In response, workers told the Minister that they had not been provided with any form of safety gear.

The Minister’s visit, originally intended to inspect ongoing railway operations, turned into a stark reminder of the urgent need to improve occupational safety measures at railway facilities.
