Minister and Chinese envoy engage in friendly badminton match

Colombo, Oct. 31 (Daily Mirror) - The Ambassador Cup 2025 International University Badminton Championship kicked off today at the University of Colombo Indoor Stadium, with Minister of State for Finance Anil Jayantha and Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong engaging in a friendly exhibition match to mark the ceremonial opening.

The spirited encounter, played in an atmosphere of camaraderie and goodwill, underscored the strengthening of sporting and diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and China.

The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister Jayantha and attended by University of Colombo Vice Chancellor Prof. Indika Karunathilaka, senior officials from the Chinese Embassy, and several distinguished guests.

The Ambassador Cup—organized by the University of Colombo with the sponsorship of Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT)—has become a key fixture in the university sports calendar.

The tournament will continue from October 31 to November 3, featuring both local and international university teams competing for top honors.
