Minister Herath engages Indian film stars to strengthen local cinema and tourism

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath met with Indian actor and producer Ravi Mohan and singer Keneesha Francis today at the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka.

The meeting focused on promoting Sri Lanka as a destination for international film productions and strengthening the local film industry through global partnerships. Minister Herath emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to introduce policy reforms aimed at attracting foreign filmmakers to the island.

Also present at the discussion was Sudath Mahadivulwewa, Chairman of the National Film Corporation. The conversation highlighted the important role of cinema and music in promoting tourism, cultural exchange, and economic development in Sri Lanka.

Long way to go for SL cinema to come to Indian standards. From film technology to make up, props and costumes, stunts and acting. There are no actors in SL cinema who even take care of their physique. Lack of discipline and knowledge.

Most Europeans think that Bollywood films are rubbish. Always the same sexist subjects, lot of too loud music, very unnatural acting. They are suitable for ignorant children. Anyway, you will not attract European tourists with this engagement.

Minister, dive deep to understand that Tamil film industry in Tamil Nadu largely depends on Lankan diaspora abroad. Because of our issues in the past, it is highly unlikely for Colombo to get this. If you play your card right, you can offer tax concessions to film here to boost local technicians.

Srilanka only produces around 12 to 15 films an year and most of them are low budget romance or history movies. CGI technology has been used in Indian movies for a long time and very few Srilankan movies use such technology. No one is interested in watching Sinhala movies even the Sinhala film enthusiasts. The minister seems to not understand this fact and he and his pacha leader will only give more false hope.

Don't you know the concept of supply and demand? Why would anyone spend money on films that you call useless if those films do not generate any money ? They produce those because there is an audience. But if you produce a good film, then audience will pack the cinemas. Example is the film about Clarence, which is running at box office now. Some scenery and camera angles were similar to Elvis Presley movie but overall it is a highly successful movie.
