Milk powder prices to increase by 4.7% from April 1

Colombo, March 18 (Daily Mirror) - Importers of milk powder have decided to increase the prices of milk powder products by 4.7%, effective April 1.

Accordingly, the price of a 400-gram packet of imported milk powder is expected to rise by approximately Rs. 50.

Before the election, they talked a lot about changing the system, helping poor people, and reducing the prices of basic necessities. But now, the NPP is following the same old ideas. @Mohammed Mahinda - I completely agree with you. This issue arises when the majority of a nation's population lacks a fundamental understanding of economic theory. The promises made by the NPP during their election campaigns were never viable from an economic standpoint. Unfortunately, many people were swayed by their rhetoric—now we are witnessing the consequences.

Why milk powder? It's always a gut punch for the babies. Can't the cost be offset by increasing prices of liquor and cigarettes or some other useless thing instead?

We must consuming fresh milk by having a cow or two at home. Many used to do that but due to commercialisation they started consuming milk powder instead. This price increase provides an incentive to people to keep cows for milking. We must therefore start increasing the local milk production rather than blaming AKD for world market price hikes which he has no control over.

The coop buts milk from us at Rs 171 per lit. Whole sellers buy coconut at Rs120 per nut. So farmers and consumers are always short changed by middleman. Sadly we as farmers can't do much as machinery and vehicle costs, to process and reach the customers are bloody expensive due to tax.
