Colombo, July 10 (Daily Mirror) - The price of imported milk powder has risen sharply in the country, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new 30% tariff on all goods imported from the country.
National Consumer Front Chairman Asela Sampath told the media today that the price of a packet of imported milk powder had increased by between Rs.100 and Rs.150 overnight.
"We are not blaming the milk powder importer associations for this price hike, as they now face an import tax of Rs.700 per kilogram of milk powder," Sampath said.
He expressed concern over the growing burden on consumers, noting that milk remains an essential dietary item, particularly for children and senior citizens. Sampath criticised the Trade Ministry and the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) for their failure to respond to the sudden increase in prices.
"Milk powder prices have effectively become a floating price, with no regulatory control," he said.
The National Consumer Front has called on the government to immediately reduce the newly imposed import tax on milk powder to ease the financial strain on consumers. Sampath also warned that the price hike in imported milk powder would lead to similar increases in locally produced milk powder, further escalating costs for households.
Sampath urged the government to intervene promptly to stabilise both imported and local milk powder prices and protect the public from further price shocks.
