Migrant remittances rise to US$ 695.7 million in September

Colombo, Oct. 13 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), citing data from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, reports that migrant worker remittances in September 2025 increased to US$ 695.7 million, marking a notable rise from US$ 555.6 million recorded in September 2024 a year-on-year increase of US$ 140.1 million.

During the first nine months of 2025, Sri Lanka received US$ 5,811.2 million in remittances, reflecting a 16.65% growth compared to US$ 4,843.9 million during the same period last year.

The SLBFE emphasized that foreign employment remains a vital pillar of Sri Lanka’s economy, contributing directly to strengthening the nation’s foreign reserves. The government, in collaboration with the SLBFE and other stakeholders, has taken several initiatives at the diplomatic level to promote overseas employment opportunities through a fair and transparent system.

A streamlined recruitment process has been introduced for job placements in Israel, Japan, and South Korea, while comprehensive measures are being implemented to curb fraudulent practices and ensure the safety and welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers.

Marking its 40th anniversary, the Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s economic progress, the Sri Lankan expatriate community, licensed foreign employment agencies, and all stakeholders in the sector.

The SLBFE expects migrant remittances to surpass US$ 7 billion by the end of 2025, with around 300,000 Sri Lankans projected to take up overseas employment this year.
