Met Dept issues heat advisory

Colombo, March 5 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for March 6, 2026, highlighting potential health risks due to elevated heat conditions. The warning specifically targets Sabaragamuwa province and the districts of Kurunegala, Gampaha, and Monaragala, where the heat index is expected to reach a “Caution” level.

According to the Department, the heat index reflects how temperature is perceived by the human body, taking humidity into account rather than relying solely on air temperature. Using maps and charts, the advisory details areas most likely to be affected.

To reduce risks such as fatigue, heat cramps, and dehydration, the public is urged to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Safety measures also include monitoring elderly individuals indoors and ensuring children are never left unattended in vehicles.

The Meteorology Department highlighted vigilance and adherence to these precautions as temperatures rise across the affected regions.
