Colombo, Jan 24 (Daily Mirror) - Following a court order, the buffet compartment of the Meenagaya inter-city express train running from Batticaloa to Colombo Fort has been temporarily sealed till February 8, the Railways Department said.
They said the court order was issued following a sudden inspection conducted over the buffet compartment on Monday (22) by a team comprising the Batticoloa Public Health Inspector (PHI).
During the sudden inspection, the group had observed that the buffet compartment was being run in an unhygienic manner, the department said
Even though the buffet compartment had been advised earlier to be maintained in a hygienic manner, it remained the same. Therefore, the complaint was heard and a court order was issued to seal the compartment.
The complaint was heard before the Batticaloa Magistrate today, and the Magistrate has ordered that the buffet compartment of the train be sealed till February 8.
Accordingly, the buffet compartment of the Meenagaya inter-city express train was sealed today at the Batticaloa railway station, and the train departed from the Batticaloa railway station at 08.15 p.m.

Except for tourist 5 star hotels , all other places are unhygienic and dirty, for example , in the Air Conditioned brand new Passport Office, the status of restaurants and rest rooms are pathetic. The toilet smell is there even at the corridor. Go and see. Even the First Class train toilets are the worst. Even our Karunanayake Airport toilets are very dirty.

By sealing the buffett canteen the commuters going on this long distance train will have to sustain on Air and no one else will suffer not even the Railways Dept and the caterers will carry on as nothing has happened what a country!!!!!!

Very tourist friendly such a shithole. Normally, a Restaurant Wagon (an entire wagon), which would have to be operated by a recognized restaurant company, as in European countries, would be an excellent source of income. The Restaurant Wagon would have to be furnished like a modern restaurant, with proper tables and padded seats. It would also be important to have a bar area that serves alcohol. The kitchen must be equipped up to date to heat and serve pre-prepared meals.

Trains in countries that were considered poor and rotten in the 1950s now have clean luxury modern looking restaurant cars. What have Sri Lankan authorities done in the last 70 odd years????????

What have people done except for protests strikes, work to rile, corruption, slow working, friends and family preferential service, bribes, etc etc. The people in those rotten places as per you worked hard for years before they got luxury trains. Here everyone wants government to give everything to them thinking that the government is like the Alladin's Magic Lamp. Then they vote thieves to rob the government.

Restaurants and Toilets in trains and railway stations including Fort station (barring Ella) are horrible and smelly. Even in some reputed malls especially in Kandy, the wash rooms are in a disgusting state despite charging fees. How do we make tourists to come back again with such pathetic hygienic environment?

This shows how inefficient the Railway administration. Give notice to those in charge to rectify the situation and fire if they are unable to deliver. These guys get paid for doing nothing. Next time before you appoint someone, go and examine the quality of their house hygiene.
