DELHI (Wisdem) - Angelo Mathews has refuted the fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock’s claims that the batter, who was ‘Timed out’ against Bangladesh, was not ready to face his first delivery within two minutes of walking in before his helmet broke, saying the team has video evidence of him being ready in time.

He has since posted stills which he says proves that he had five seconds left on the timer before being given out.

Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be ‘Timed out’ as he looked for a replacement for his broken helmet before facing his first ball in the 2023 World Cup clash. Walking in to bat after the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 25th over, Mathews was ruled out as he was not ready to start batting within the stipulated two minutes.

Fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock later said that the time limit had elapsed even before the helmet came undone and that Mathews was not prepared to face the first ball till then. The all-rounder, however, denied the comments vehemently, saying he had proof that he was ready to bat with five seconds to spare before his strap broke.

“The rule clearly says, in my incident today, within two minutes I was there. We have video evidence. We will put out a statement later on. We have video evidence, footage, everything was looked. I’m not just coming and saying things here. I’m talking with proof.

“So, we have the video evidence where from the time the catch was taken, and then from the time I walked into the crease, I still had five seconds after breaking my helmet. So, we talk about safety of the players – you guys tell me if It’s right for me to take my guard without my helmet on? It’s just pure common sense.”

On being asked specifically about the fourth umpire’s comments, Mathews said Holdstock would have a different answer now if he was asked whether he was ready in time before two minutes were up. “If you ask the question from now, he would have a different answer. Because we have evidence, video evidence. As I said, I’m not just saying what I’m just saying. I have the video evidence and if anybody wants to contest it, I urge them to.”

Mathews, in a reply on X (formerly Twitter) to the ICC, posted timestamped video stills showing that one minute and 55 seconds had elapsed between the catch of Samarawickrama being taken and his helmet strap breaking.

The game ended in a tense win for Bangladesh, but the match remained embroiled in controversy as the Sri Lanka players refused to shake hands with their rivals, with Mathews saying the side would respect people who respected them.

For the money these umpires will sell their mother even!!

    Fred Tuesday, 07 November 2023 09:34 AM

If you have the evidence hire the best lawyers and get the cricket board behind you they have the funds Umpires should be held to account if they are wrong. It was a serious match changing decision

    Johan Tuesday, 07 November 2023 09:41 AM

You should check your gear prior to going to crease. Also you should have told the umpire and shown the helmet to umpire prior to asking a new helmet. Learn to respect the umpires on the field. Now no point in crying.

    Chris Tuesday, 07 November 2023 01:31 PM

    Exactly.

Check your helmet Wednesday, 08 November 2023 01:34 AM

Except for the first sentence I totally agree with your comment. The strap came off only when he tried to tighten it. Hope you saw that on TV. Do you expect the batsmen to check and wear the helmet and wait for their turn to bat? If not the delay would have any how happened but before the batsman stepped on to the field and still resulted in a time out. Did you realize that the SLC, the players etc., are from the same SL population you come from and any future SLC or player will come. How can one expect them to be different than the present lot??

Mathews; You are responsible as a senior player. Accept the mistake. You guys are taken to granted.

Created an Unnecessary Controversy. Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:01 AM

Why didn't Mathew's stay prepared with a proper helmet etc before leaving the dressing room to get into the pitch ?

    Bandu Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:16 AM

Fully agreed that we talk about safety of the players – you guys tell me if It’s right for me to take my guard without my helmet on? It’s just pure common sense. If you can give time to change bats and gloves, and slightest hit on the helmet requires a physio/medic check, can the umpires insist on batting with a defective helmet. The strap broke just when he pulled the strap at the crease and readi in all other aspects to bat.

Very true Wednesday, 08 November 2023 01:36 AM

    Absolutely correct

Lord Stirbird Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:32 AM

Hope Sri Lanka will stand tall by ending this bitter rivalry with this match without taking it any further. In life and more so in sports, its the team that acts honourably and in a sporty way even in the face of unfair unsportsmanly behaviour are the ones that finally earn the respect of others.

    RR Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:36 AM

WE WILL NOW HAVE TO INTRODUCE A "5TH"UMPIRE TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION

    Ram Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:47 AM

Mathews may have a point if the strap broke. He should have checked the helmet before leaving to bat. If he knew the rule he should have faced the first ball before asking for a helmet. He is no baby and could have easily faced one ball from the spinner who was bowling at the time

Did you watch it on TV Wednesday, 08 November 2023 01:44 AM

"Mathew may have a point ....". So you have not watched it on TV and not aware of what happened !!! Then you are not qualified to comment. So many mishaps happen in people's life despite being careful and vigilant. So despite previously checking the strap would have still come off. It's called "an act of god".

    Aussie Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:48 AM

    My God, what a crybaby!

    Dakuneyaka Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:49 AM

    Shakib

Gert Jan, the Netherlands Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:53 AM

So the Sri Lankan team could have won the game if he was not given out?

    Definitely Wednesday, 08 November 2023 01:24 AM

    Definitely.

Sharon McNeilly, Melbourne Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:59 AM

Look at his profilepicture, hahahaha:)) Hilarious!

    joshua Tuesday, 07 November 2023 11:16 AM

Yeah safety was important. Without a helmet Shakib would have felled him with a spinning bouncer?

    Fact Tuesday, 07 November 2023 11:25 AM

Rules are Rules and spirit is spirit. It all depends on how one views it. Just move on for the better.

    Sarath Tuesday, 07 November 2023 11:38 AM

If it happened to an Indian Player verdict would have been totally different!

    Gamaya Tuesday, 07 November 2023 11:39 AM

Shit happens you just got to wipe it and move on, whats the point of crying over this incident, if at all everyone should have come together and won the match with a better performance like SL team did in the 1990s when Murali was called for chucking. Whats the point of staying in that moment?

    joshua Tuesday, 07 November 2023 12:13 PM

Nobody can blame Bangladesh. It is Mathews' fault for not checking the gear before walking out. Now no use crying over spilt milk. Anyway, even if he was recalled, I don't think it would have made any difference to the final outcome of the match. We got hammered by the Bangladesh guys.

Premalal Perera Tuesday, 07 November 2023 12:27 PM

You should have taken guard without the helmet and then gone for new helmet.

Devika Fernando Tuesday, 07 November 2023 01:58 PM

I think it was very unfair by Angelo Matthews and the Sri Lankan team. Finally for no apparent fault of theirs since it was a problem with the helmet they ended up having only 9 batsmen. Had Matthews being allowed to bat and he scored Sri Lanka may have won.

Liberal One Tuesday, 07 November 2023 03:46 PM

So south asian. We like to blame everything on politicians but look how our cricketers behave.

Mohammed intiquab Ghouse Tuesday, 07 November 2023 04:47 PM

Bangladesh were nervous, they didn't want him to bat. thanks to Dev Vatmore.

    Bandu Tuesday, 07 November 2023 06:21 PM

I like to see in the next match with Kusal with a stopwatch in his pocket timing every dismissal and new batters readiness. What a joke of a rule.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Tuesday, 07 November 2023 07:51 PM

This is a cheeky decision, Bangaladesh/Sri Lanka match should be replayed or fifty, fifty points should be given to both teams, in fact Sri Lanka's winning chance was snatched by unjustifiable grounds.

    Sambo Tuesday, 07 November 2023 08:02 PM

There is something very wrong with the handling of the DRS system during the entire tournament. Many comments from past and current plyers from around the world.

    RR Wednesday, 08 November 2023 08:52 AM

OF COURSE SHAKIB HAS LOST HIS HEAD AFTER BECOMING THE CAPT OF THE TEAM AND IS TAKING SHAMEFUL DECISIONS

    Fact Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:43 AM

Be happy man, at least your name will be there in the book of records...and definitely wiĺl be remembered in every world cup...
