Mandatory certification of employment agreements for non-domestic jobs from June 7: SLBFE

Colombo, May 30 (Daily Mirror) - All individuals seeking self-employment in non-domestic sector jobs abroad will be required to have their employment agreements certified as a mandatory step in the registration process from June 7, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said.

SLBFE Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe said that this decision was made following a thorough investigation into the various issues faced by Sri Lankan workers migrating for non-domestic employment.

According to the new regulation, employment agreements must be certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the respective country before applicants can proceed with registration for overseas employment in the non-domestic sector.

“In countries where Sri Lanka does not maintain diplomatic missions, the employment agreements will need to be approved by the SLBFE’s head office, the airport unit or one of the district offices,” Chairman Wickramasinghe said.

The certification requirement is now a prerequisite for all non-domestic employment registrations and is aimed at enhancing the protection and welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers.
