Colombo, May 7 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that the electoral system is faulty, JVP general secretary Tilvin Silva said today that the mandate is not the total votes of all the rejected parties but the majority votes secured by a single party.

He told a news conference that there is an issue in the electoral system where one who gets lesser number of votes can even get a seat due to the proportional representation system.

"One cannot put votes secured by all rejected political parties to one group and call it as the manadate. The manadate is the majority votes secured by a single party," he said.

First-past-the-post is unfair because a candidate can win without majority support, that don't reflect the preferences of most voters. I think the Australian preferential system is better. 1). Voters rank candidates in order of preference (1, 2, 3…). 2). If a candidate gets over 50% of first preference votes, they win. 3). If not, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates based on the next preference marked. 4). This process continues until one candidate has more than 50%. It's designed to reflect voter intent more accurately, even if their first choice doesn't win. Of course this works when you contest an electorate and not an entire district.

Taken individually the NPP has been accepted by the majority of those who voted. Now those rejects together say they have won. Is there not an anomaly in this, that the lot of the rejects together come on top. May be mathematically on the basis that : - x - = minus into minus equals plus.

A mandate means having the support of a large number of people. If you include the percentage of people who did not vote—which was quite high—along with the combined opposition votes, which exceeded your own, it clearly shows that the government has lost the confidence of the majority of a very large population. So instead of making excuses, focus on development and work towards the benefit of the people. You still hold a two-thirds majority in Parliament and the Presidency. Use this golden opportunity to walk the talk and put an end to the constant nonsense we see coming from your side almost every day. That, in my view, is the true mandate the people gave your President and parliamentary colleagues in this election.

Remember if the voters liked the opposition parties they could have come and voted to the opposition. they voters did not do so, ie no trust/ confidence in the opposition too .your argument does not hold, several elections in the past months are bound to be a degree of voter apathy.

I agree that there is significant voter apathy, with many people fed up with all parties — and that’s not a good sign for Sri Lanka. Additionally, voters who support an opposition party but believe the ruling or favored party will win often don’t turn up at the polls either. However, my core point is about the mandate. The government certainly cannot go around claiming they have received a fresh mandate. In my view, the message from the people in this election is clear: get on with the job and fulfill the more important mandate given at the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections, instead of constantly offering excuses.

Election system is not faulty Mr 78 plus. It is a very good system which has prevented fight for preferential votes within parties and also has given an option for minor groups to voice their problem at local council. If any party get over 50 percent of votes or the gap between first and second is massive the winner has a clear majority. If the above condition fails only the winner has a problem. Only a minor change need in the system so that winner and total opposition seats does not tally causing problem in forming the LG body. After all calculations, add a virtual bonus seat for the winner. The winning party leader of the LG will have that additional vote at the council. Simple correction.

So the NPP has lost 2 Million voters in just 6 months. They will loose another 4 million voters in the next 2 years and will be limited to their 4% vote base. But red army tactics s will keep them in power through elimination of credible opponents. Wait and see. Their leader Pachanayake hired a private jet to come back just to cast his vote. The government of Sri Lanka will settle the bill for the private jet without telling anyone. It will be hidden in some trade outpayments to Vietnam.

You ate into the vote base of SLPP very easily at the two prominent elections held last year as the supporters of SLPP vented their anger against the latter and now they are slowly drifting away from you and you will be reduced to 3% of the vote base sooner or later because it is a calculation of loan with interest you will have to pay to the SLPP and you blame the electoral system for denying your party majority in some local government bodies but remember the same electoral system saved your skin by reducing your representation in the Parliament in the past to three members.

Whether you agree or not, you will be at the mercy of rejected parties, if their total seats are greater than your single party with most seats but less than 50% of total seats. It is time that you worry about your plight in this situation. Go and get support from some opposition parties to form a viable majority. Otherwise there will be eternal fear of NO COFIDENCE MOTION. We had such a Minority Govt. in the past.
