Males continue to account for most HIV/AIDS cases in Sri Lanka



During the first nine months of 2024, over 70 HIV-positive males are between 15-24 years old, while only five female cases were reported in this age group, according official data.

So far in 2024, 74 cases have been reported among males in the 15-24 age group.

The ratio of reported cases between males and females in 2024 is 8:1, showing that males are the majority of those affected.

According to the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, Sri Lanka is experiencing a rise in HIV/AIDS cases, with over 600 new infections and 35 deaths reported during the first nine months of 2024. Data for the last quarter is still pending.

In comparison, the first nine months of 2023 saw 485 cases, meaning there was a 27% increase in cases in 2024.

Out of the cases reported in early 2024, 23 males and only five females were aged 15-24, while the rest were older than 25.
