Maldives President to visit Sri Lanka

Colombo, April 11 (Daily Mirror) - The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka next month, with discussions already underway to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fisheries sector.

A meeting was recently held at the Parliamentary complex between Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and the Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka to discuss preparations for the visit and explore new investment opportunities.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, both sides engaged in extensive discussions on expanding collaboration in the fisheries industry in parallel with the upcoming visit.

The Minister highlighted the importance of sharing expertise between the two countries and noted the potential to introduce new products by combining the Maldives’ fresh fish resources with Sri Lanka’s established canned fish industry.

Both parties also expressed strong interest in processing production within Sri Lanka and developing value-added fish products aimed at the Maldivian market, the Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, some products labeled “Made in Sri Lanka” are exported to the Maldives through intermediaries via Dubai. Discussions also focused on establishing a direct supply mechanism to streamline exports between the two countries.
