Colombo, August 26 (Daily Mirror) - Police have arrested a major cannabis trafficker who was allegedly packaging and selling drugs in Kandy city, along with a motorcycle, on the Kandy New Road yesterday (25), Ginigathhena Police Chief Inspector Viraj Withanage said.
According to police, the suspect, a 40-year-old resident of the Dehiyamwala area in Kandy, was taken into custody following a sting operation. He had been under surveillance for engaging in drug trafficking for some time.
Earlier the same day, police arrested another suspect from the Rambukpitiya area of Nawalapitiya with 490 milligrams of cannabis in the Ambagamuwa area. Interrogation of the first suspect led officers, under the instructions of Hatton Divisional SSP Pradeep Weerasekara and ASP Nissanka Godamunna, to set up a trap for the main trafficker.
A police officer, posing as a buyer, contacted the trafficker and requested Rs. 15,000 worth of cannabis to be delivered to the Kandy New Road. When the suspect arrived and completed the transaction, he was arrested. A search of his vehicle uncovered 24 packets of cannabis weighing 240 grams, each packed in 10-gram portions.
Chief Inspector Withanage said the two suspects, along with the seized cannabis and vehicle, will be produced before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court.
