Mahindananda’s appeal against conviction and sentence fixed for hearing



Colombo, Jan. 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Supreme Court today fixed 9 March for the hearing of the appeal applications filed by former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando, challenging the legality of the High Court judgment that convicted and sentenced them over the controversial carrom board case.

The appeals were taken up today before a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Achala Wengappuli and were fixed for argument on 9 March.

On May 29, 2025, the Colombo High Court Permanent Trial-at-Bar sentenced Aluthgamage to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and Fernando to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment, after finding them guilty of causing a financial loss to the government exceeding Rs. 53 million.
