Colombo, Feb 28 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Jaffna District Organizer Geethanath Cassilingam has defended former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, stating that his contributions to the country far outweigh the expenses incurred on foreign visits during his tenure.
Responding to Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s revelation in Parliament that Rajapaksa had spent Rs. 3,572 million on foreign visits between 2010 and 2014, Cassilingam argued that these trips brought significant economic benefits to Sri Lanka.
“The grants secured from countries like India, China, Iran, Libya, and the Middle East were far greater than the costs of those trips. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka attracted more investments than any other leader before him. I challenge anyone to overrule this fact,” Cassilingam stated in a post on X.
He further emphasized that Rajapaksa’s leadership led to visible development across Colombo, Jaffna, Hambantota, Monaragala, and other districts, with infrastructure growth and economic progress as proof of his contributions.
Cassilingam’s remarks came after Prime Minister Amarasuriya compared foreign travel expenditures of past Presidents, highlighting that current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had spent only Rs. 1.8 million on three official visits so far.
