Mahanayaka Theros call for peace between Thailand, Cambodia

Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero submitted a special letter to Minister Vijitha Herath today (30), conveying a united appeal from the four Mahanayaka Theros of Sri Lanka for peace and harmony between Thailand and Cambodia.

The letter, jointly signed by Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thero (Malwatta Chapter), Most Ven. Warakagoda Dharmasiddhi Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayaka Thero (Asgiriya Chapter), Most Ven. Makulewe Sri Wimala Mahanayaka Thero (Ramanna Sect) and Most Ven. Karagoda Uyangoda Maithri Murthi Mahanayaka Thero (Amarapura Sect), expresses deep concern over the conflict that has arisen between the two nations.

While the dispute concerns the ownership of an ancient temple, the letter emphasides that exploiting religious sentiments for conflict is against the teachings of the Buddha. The Mahanayaka Theros urged both governments, as well as religious leaders and practitioners in Thailand and Cambodia, to uphold the noble heritage of Buddhism by resolving differences peacefully and fostering harmony.

“As followers of the Buddha, it is our bounden duty to ensure that his teachings of peace and non-violence are maintained in practice,” the letter states, reminding that history has shown the vital role monks have played in preventing violence and nurturing coexistence.

Also, set up strict rules and code of ethics for monks and disrobe those who don't comply. Code of Ethics should be no eating of meat, fish or non vegetarian food including at Dana's, not getting involved in politics, not going on streets at night, leading a strict single life giving up all worldly life, practising compassion and peace, promoting unity among all.people, counselling people with good habbits.

The Thai and Cambodian government don't give much reverence monks in those countries. Buddism is just a religion, not entered as special like in the outdated racist constitution here.

We had years long brutal war, both sides killing each other. People disappeared during war, still not accounted. Who asked for peace, we allowed the politicians to run the war and they used the wars to earn wealth not only to them, but to their generations too to an extent the country went bankrupt whilst privileged people driving on V8's. Let's get together and get the country back to track. Why we are worried about other countries.
