Mahanayaka Thera’s decry propaganda ahead of Diyawadana Nilame election

Colombo, September 17 (Daily Mirror)- The prelates appealed to all parties to refrain from engaging in propaganda based on personal agendas and hatred.

In a press communique, the prelates said the office of Diyawadana Nilame is a noble position held in high esteem by Buddhists worldwide, noting that he serves as the lay guardian of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which is venerated as the Buddha Himself.

They pointed out that the election, held once every ten years under the Temporalities Ordinance No. 19 of 1931, is being organised as the term of the incumbent Diyawadana Nilame has ended. Several candidates, including the Acting Diyawadana Nilame, are contesting.

However, the Mahanayaka Thera's expressed serious concern over attempts by supporters of different candidates to resort to disparaging campaigns, warning that such actions could harm the Buddha Sasana, undermine traditional customs and rituals, and bring disrepute to Buddhist places of worship.

The prelates appealed to all parties to refrain from engaging in propaganda based on personal agendas and hatred, and to safeguard the honour and integrity of lay custodians of Buddhist institutions, including the office of the Diyawadana Nilame.

Nilanga Dela is the most corrupt Diyawadana nilame in its history. This guy was appointed with the backing of Mahinda since his father Dixon Dela is his best friend . High time to get rid of this rouge and NPP and bribery commission should keep a close eye on this election

If Diyawadana Nilame is such a clean character why Mahanayaka Thera's are worried so much. If he is clean person let him face any injury or legal action and get his name cleared.

The Ven. Mahanayaka Theros are 100% correct. The Diyawadana Nilame is a noble position and that is why a closed election is held every ten years to ensure that a honest and devoted custodian is elected to the office in ten-year intervals rather than in every twenty- or thirty-year intervals. Unfortunately, rightly or wrongly, there have been many rumors of corruption over the past 20 years about the actions of the Diyawadana Nilame who has been in office for all that time and now trying aiming to make it a 30 years tenue. That is why those allegations and rumors of kickbacks are surfacing now at the time of this election making it very detrimental to this noble office. Real Buddhists understand that the root of suffering is attachment and desire for things to be permanent and not letting go. That should be the principal upheld in this office and the Nilames as well.
