In a thrilling first ODI of the three-match series, Sri Lanka defeated Zimbabwe by seven runs in the final over, thanks to a stunning maiden hat-trick by Dilshan Madushanka.
Sri Lanka, batting first, posted a strong total of 298 runs. Zimbabwe responded valiantly, with Sikandar Raza leading the charge, but their lower order crumbled under pressure in the last over as Madushanka sealed the game with three wickets in three balls.
The hosts lost opener Nishan Madushka early, dismissed for a 13-ball duck by Richard Ngarava, giving Zimbabwe the initial breakthrough. However, Pathum Nissanka steadied the innings with a composed 76 off 92 balls.
Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama chipped in with 38 and 35 runs, respectively, before Janith Liyanage delivered the perfect finishing touch. Liyanage smashed an unbeaten 70 off just 47 balls, hitting six fours and three towering sixes, while Kamindu Mendis played a blistering cameo of 57 off 36 balls.
Their late fireworks powered Sri Lanka to 298 in their 50 overs. For Zimbabwe, Ngarava claimed two wickets, while Blessing Muzarabani, Trevor Gwandu, Sikandar Raza, and Sean Williams picked up a wicket apiece.
