MPs to receive vehicles from next budget: President

Colombo, August 7 (Daily Mirror) - The government will provide a vehicle to each MP from the next budget to be returned after the MP's tenure, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

He said this while making a special statement in Parliament.

Replacing duty-free permits with taxpayer-funded vehicles for MPs is not a fiscally responsible approach and would place additional pressure on already strained public finances. Operating government-owned vehicles in Sri Lanka costs between Rs 300 and 500 per kilometre. Establishing a fleet for 225 MPs would require substantial investment, including costs for purchase, maintenance, staffing, insurance, depreciation, and eventual disposal. In contrast, the duty-free permit system places the cost of purchase and upkeep on MPs. Although it results in some loss of revenue, it avoids significant upfront and recurring expenses, making it a more practical and cost-effective alternative for the taxpayer.

It is a good idea and MPs must have their cars to go to their duties but all those cars must be returned after their terms is finished: that is a good idea and reasonable as well : Those positions of MPs are not permanent as civil servants or other jobs but time limited with their next election so if they do not win next they must return them : this is a logical and reasonable decision:

What an absurdity! When even the British MPs aren't given vehicles, what makes Sri Lankan MPs so special to be given vehicles and that too when the country is struggling with heavy debts and people unable to make ends meet.

Why not give just one duty free permit for MP's to purchase a normal double cab, setting a maximum price of say 5 Million Sri Lanka rupees per permit ? Then the Government does not have to maintain the vehicles etc;;
