MPs, social media paid to highlight SL expat workers’ issues: Manusha alleges

Minister of Foreign Employment and Labour Manusha Nanayakkara today came out with some shocking revelations in the foreign employment sector where MPs and social media have been paid to highlight issues faced by Sri Lankan expatriate workers.

“We have received information that some MPs have received payments for raising issues about Sri Lanka expatriate workers. We also have information that social media groups have also been paid to expose the issues faced by Sri Lankan expatriates on their portals,” the Minister said.

“It has also been disclosed that an unlawful insurance scheme has been introduced by certain Sri Lankan diplomats together with politicians. A sum of US$30 has been charged from some Sri Lankan expatriate workers under this scheme, but they have not been given any benefit in return,” he added.

“We did have issues pertaining to Sri Lankan expatriate workers, but we have managed to control them. We also have decided not to send in Sri Lankans for unskilled jobs if the respective countries do not agree to our terms and conditions,” the Minister also said.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
