Colombo, April 16 (Daily Mirror) - A group of MPs from both the ruling party and the opposition have urged the speaker and government officials to provide vehicle permits at lower prices if the previously issued duty-free licenses cannot be granted before the upcoming presidential election.

Sources said that the MPs plan to address this issue in the House Committee of Parliament in the near future.

Several MPs from both political factions have highlighted to parliamentary leaders the significant challenge posed by the lack of vehicles for conducting political activities during the forthcoming elections. They have emphasized that several newly elected MPs do not possess any vehicles.

In the past, every MP was granted a duty-free vehicle license, allowing them to purchase a vehicle valued at nearly 20 million rupees. However, due to the country's economic conditions, the issuance of these licenses were halted approximately nine years ago, with the last issuance occurring in 2015. Despite ongoing requests from MPs for duty-free vehicle licenses, the government has refrained from making a decision on this matter, considering the nation's economic circumstances.

The answer loud and clear should be 'NO'. This amply demonstrates the self-serving nature of the MP's when the country is going through extremely difficult times. Inability to undertake political activities without new vehicles if rubbish. Let them learn from other political parties going about their political business without asking for new vehicles. These guys are merely seeking to look after themselves and to hell with the country. Please name and publicise each and every single one of those MP's who are clamoring for the vehicle imports. There are plenty of very reasonably priced second hand vehicles available in the market today if they really want their own a vehicle to get about in. It one came to parliament with out a vehicle, leave without one. Entering parliament is not the passport to enrich themselves with vehicle. What sort of thinking is within the minds of these guys is beyond comprehension. If they still don't realise the country is in very serious financial strife.

Absolutely correct, your comments on the subject is really commendable.

People are starving and these scumbags are only interested in vehicle permits.

Only Interested In Their Wellbeing Tuesday, 16 April 2024 02:32 PM

Spot on! No sense of urgency and importance for the current hardship people are going through. Only interested in themselves and ensuring they and their families continue the best possible luxury lifestyle’s. The purpose of politics is to improve the country and the living standards of the people. Sadly not in SL and most 3rd world countries political arena. If only the politicians were able to adapt the working attitudes of their counterparts in Japan, Singapore and some European nations to improve the living standards.

NO. Our hard-earned foreign exchange is not for these crooks. They can use bicycles.

    Jayantha Tuesday, 16 April 2024 08:47 AM

If someone does not have an own vehicle. Such loosers should first buy with cash or lease an own vehicle. Why government has to spend on loosers. Such loosers and beggers should not come to politics. When you are voting someone in future make sure that the individual has his own vehicle, house and stable income. Otherwise these ate the biggest theives that will destroy economy with various free perks.

    sam Tuesday, 16 April 2024 08:52 AM

What is special about MP's to be given vehicle permits?

    joshua Tuesday, 16 April 2024 12:27 PM

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 16 April 2024 08:57 AM

Whatever priced, you Ministers want to make a quick buck before all of you rascals are wiped out at the next elections. So that is the reason for this crooked request. Even if the ship is sinking, you fellows will want small bottles of champagne served for only your benefit.

    Nimal Tuesday, 16 April 2024 08:58 AM

Now it is clearer than ever before, who these scoundrels are serving. In addition, they require these vehicles for political activities, ostensibly to retain their seats in parliament. What wishful thinking. Almost all the ruling party mps would be chased away.

    Mithun Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:02 AM

All of them know that after the presidential election they won't get any perks. AKD fear.

This is reality Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:09 AM

Is this the need of the hour? Poor fellows! Give them all a three wheeler or a scooter to make them happy.

Gappi Lahiri Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:13 AM

No need these MP s to travel to promote themselves. Do your job at the ministry and electorate and stay home. Take public transport also. Looks like trying to hang on to the last straw of benifit before getting kicked out at the elections

    Tilak Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:14 AM

before the elections- what's the hurry Are they travelling by bullock carts now

    anil Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:14 AM

    N. Jayasinghe Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:44 AM

Publish the names of all these MP's , and vote them out of office at the next election. They are not working for the country they are working for them selves

    Jan Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:47 AM

Please name the MP’s requesting car permits during times of hardship to masses.

    Seeya Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:48 AM

What BS, if they dont have a vehicle do you think they will be able to come to parliament? Ok let them buy locally assembled vehicles like how the Government servants are buying. You will not be sending money out also they will be much cheaper.

    RuwanL Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:58 AM

Yes! Why don't we give them Mercs or BMWs for ruining our country? Ask them to use public transport so that they know our hardship. They are totally responsible for the state of the country. Some should be in jail!! Don't vote for those scumbags who have requested for permits! Can we have a list please?

    roni Tuesday, 16 April 2024 09:59 AM

This is a joke. Having been responsible to make the country bankrupt. Harassing the people with high taxes. Want to go out on a high. If so, import of vehicles for common man should also be permitted. This equates to the Central Bank action of unprecedent salary hike.to its employees.

    mohandev Tuesday, 16 April 2024 10:09 AM

No problem, give all 225 access to buy cash down or instalment basis as done previously for privileged MPs STRICTLY ONLY FOR locally assembled approved any brand, model, type of a vehicle provided this is a cabinet decision

    Ronnie Tuesday, 16 April 2024 11:43 AM

Government should scrape all this nonsense until countries debts been paid Then countries recovery for prosperity once all clear if this fellows deserve then giving permits other facilities have no issues while contries in financial difficulties people suffering from left right centre should stop all unnesory expenses completely......

Pathmaranjan Perera Tuesday, 16 April 2024 12:23 PM

No vehicle permits for MP's . Why duty free permits for them.

Trehan Munasinghe Tuesday, 16 April 2024 01:24 PM

Tell them to travel in Public Transport (buses or trains) they are not sent to Parliament to enjoy luxury at the Republic's expense. If they want luxury then seek employment and earn your money.

    roobarbie Tuesday, 16 April 2024 01:57 PM

Kala dutu kala wala ihagan! Leeches not MPs representing suffering public.
