MPs begin paying Rs. 2,000 for daily meals in Parliament

Members of Parliament began paying the increased amount of Rs. 2,000 for their daily meals from today, February 5, 2025.

Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake confirmed that he paid Rs. 2,000 for his daily meals. He posted his bills on Facebook as well.

Last month the House Keeping Committe of Parliament decided to increase the price of the daily meals to Rs. 2,000 with effect from February 1, 2025.

Excellent news, Parliamentarians are paid employees, and the special status should be ended. Well done AKD! AKD should target our corrupt court system where cases are dragged for years for no reason by lawyers in cahoots with each other and ripping off citizens. People are afraid to go to courts because of this corrupt system and the individuals who think they can bully people and rip them off. No other professionals can do this thieving practice and get away with it.

The current system we have now if you make any traffic offences they would issue a ticket and retain your licence to pay the fine you have to go to post office to pay for it then with the slip you go the Police station to get your license back this is what one of the cop explained to me. Don't know whether it's true or not,it's happened to me when I was coming down from CMB to jaffna after Omanthai A9 almost straight and clear It's about 2.30 Am these guys are not visible at all then suddenly the torch light talks in his sign language when lights goes ups down you have to stop then the lights will tells in his sign pull over -so easiest is santhosam even though we also part of it

WE HAVE LOST TRACK OF HOW MUCH DID THE PREVIOUS GOVT HAVE ALLOCATED FOR THEIR DAILY MEALS AGAINST THIS GOVT? ALSO WHAT MEALS DO THEY HAVE WHILE IN PARLIAMENT AND IS IT ONE STANDERD MEAL FOR ALL?. DO THEY PAY FOR MEALS AND TAKE THEM WITH THEM HOME (LIKE FOR THEIR DINNER)?. WHAT WAS THE PREVIOUS PROCEDURE FOR MEMBERS MEALS AND HOW ARE MEALS ACCOUNTED FOR, HAS EACH MEMBER GOT A FILE OPENED OUT IN THE CANTEEN ON RECORD?. WE KNOW ANURA/NPP WILL NOT ACT RASHLY AND SPEND MEALS MONEY, JUST TRYING TO ALLOW THE PEOPLE TO COMPARE AND CONTRAST.

A good historical precedent and this is what we expect from MPs: instead of living on public money they should spend their money for their meals : 225 have been jolly riding on public funds in many ways: Now a new culture has been created and parliament is not money making machine for MPs but it is a public funded establishment and all MPs should learn a new tradition from now on : I hope this send a new message to all other parliaments in the world : Let all now learn from Sri Lankan political culture: NPP shows its intellectual acumen and political wisdom in this way : what a good example: people must appreciate good thing even if it comes from opposition parties : How does Ranil think about it? How does Sajith think about it?

Still way low. It should be raised to 5000 at least as breakfast, morning tea, lunch and evening tea is also included. Hill Samantha should be more as he eats like as if he has not eaten for years.

No it should be the same cost as they expect thr public to spend on meals, some people only eat once per day because or greed of politicians, politicians should live like the people, eat like the people, spend like the people so they know the ISSUES of the people first hand and have motivation to uplift all sri lankans

Very good move. But what do they eat for 2000. Perhaps before the cost of meals was much higher. One day long ago I was an observer during a parliament session. Only about 20% of the seats were occupied by MPs. An attendance register would tell us how many hours they are at parliament sessions.

Who is actually paying the bill? NPP MPs are not getting their salaries as it is going to the party fund. Is the party paying them back higher amounts than their salaries and in that case is NPP having some undeclared income? Need to investigate from where the NPP MPs getting money.
