Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has called for an investigation into the death of a 43-year-old Sri Lankan man while in police custody at the Jinjang Central lockup in Malaysia. While urging all parties to allow the police space and time to conduct their investigation,

Lim emphasized the need for serious action to be taken in cases of deaths in police custody. He called for a post-mortem examination to be conducted and for the CCTV footage inside the lockup center to be thoroughly examined.

If there is no CCTV footage available, Lim stated that the police must provide an explanation for its absence. The victim had been arrested along with his wife on September 22 in connection with the murder of three Sri Lankan men in Sentul. His detention had been extended until October 5, but he died on September 30, a day before his scheduled release.

There are still seven suspects remaining in remand for the murder investigation. Lim expressed his intention to meet with Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Alaudeen Abdul Majid to discuss issues related to custodial deaths and public safety in the Federal Territory.

The death of any individual while in police custody is a matter of great concern and warrants a thorough investigation. It is important to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to determine the cause of death and to hold any responsible parties accountable.

Lim’s call for a post-mortem examination and a review of CCTV footage is crucial in shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Such evidence can provide valuable insights into what transpired during his time in custody and whether any misconduct or negligence occurred.

The absence of CCTV footage, if indeed the case, raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the police. It is essential that the police provide a clear explanation as to why there is no footage available. This will help address concerns about the handling of evidence and ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair and impartial manner.

The meeting between Lim Lip Eng and Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Alaudeen Abdul Majid is a positive step towards addressing the issue of custodial deaths and improving public safety in the Federal Territory. It is important for lawmakers and law enforcement officials to engage in open dialogue and work together to find effective solutions to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

The death of the Sri Lankan man in police custody highlights the need for continuous efforts to safeguard the rights and well-being of individuals in custody. It is crucial that investigations into such cases are conducted thoroughly, with a focus on transparency and accountability. By doing so, we can strive towards a society where everyone is treated fairly and with dignity, regardless of their circumstances.(The Thaiger.)

Woman in custody had her son murdered, then her husband die in police custody? She is all alone and probably most distraught. What can our government do for her?

Malaysian and Singaporean Police Tuesday, 03 October 2023 01:27 PM

Both in Malaysia and Singapore, the police are very violent to those they arrest. Unlike in India or Sri Lanka, in Malaysia and Singapore the police brutality is behind close doors. Specially in Singapore, the newspapers are frightened to criticise their police force and the quality of Lawyers is very poor.
