Jaffna District Parliamentarian Archchuna Ramanathan, said that he appointed his relative as his research officer and received payment for his expenses.
In an interview with a YouTube channel, he said as a parliamentarian, he received a salary of Rs. 56,000 per month and an allowance of Rs. 125,000 based on the distance between his district and parliament. He said all the allowances he received amounted to Rs. 275,000.
Following his payment details, he explained the monthly expenses he faces, including paying bank loans, buying shirts and suits for himself, paying school fees for his son, house rent, etc.
He admitted that some allowances from parliament allowed him to hire some staff members, a research officer, driver, typist, and secretary, and that he named his relative his elder brother’s son, Mr. Ramakrishna Arivanban as his research officer and promised to pay his salary, which amounts to Rs. 56,000 for his (Archchuna’s) monthly expenses.
He also said that the appointed relative asked him to give him at least a partial amount as his fee, but he refused to provide it, saying he did not have enough money for his expenses.
Archchuna said that he has to run his life only with the help of Mr.Ramakrishna Arivanban’s salary.
This has sparked controversy among voters in the Jaffna and Kilinochchi electoral districts, particularly among those who supported him.
