Colombo, Sept. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The luxury car involved in the recent fatal accident with a bus at Rawanaella on the Ella–Wellawaya Road was not equipped with recording facilities in its security camera system, its agents have confirmed.

According to the supplier, the car, valued at Rs. 80 million and purchased in 2003 from a company in Boralesgamuwa, came fitted with a four-camera security system designed only for the driver’s convenience. However, the company clarified that it did not include recording capabilities unless specifically requested, which most owners do not opt for.

The report was submitted to the police following a court order, Ella Police OIC CI T.K.U. W. Abeygunawardene said.

Meanwhile, Bandarawela Magistrate Gemunu Chandrasekara on Wednesday (17) ordered the release of the luxury vehicle to its owner on a security bond of Rs. 80 million. The magistrate further directed that the vehicle’s original colour must not be altered and it cannot be transferred or sold.

The case has been postponed to October 28.

A car over 20 years old like this one would have no value at all in Germany. In cities, you would not be allowed to drive this vehicle at all for environmental reasons. You would even have to pay to have it scrapped.

It is probably not 2003 , has to be a recent model and the recording function is optional . The judgement appears to be a JVP style judgement where the owner has to secure a bond of Rs 80 million to get the car back and there is a prohibition on sale or transfer. So the court appears to be punishing the richer class for no fault other than driving in the other direction, does the judge expect the car to climb into the hill side to avoid getting hot by the faulty bus driven by a careless driver. Looks like the judgement is based on the rich poor mentality.
