Colombo, April 12 (Daily Mirror) - As many as 250 gigawatt-hours of electricity are expected to be lost over the three-month period of April, May, and June due to the use of inferior-quality coal, an Opposition politician alleged.
Quoting the economic dispatch of power plants by the National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd (NSO), United Republican Front (URF) leader Patali Champika Ranawaka said this was clearly reflected in the company’s monthly dispatch figures.
It is a state-owned company in Sri Lanka, established on March 9, 2026, following the dissolution of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) under the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024. The NSO is responsible for generation scheduling, economic dispatch of power plants, and planning future generation and transmission capacity.
Ranawaka, who once served as the Power and Energy Minister, said the issue of substandard coal could not be swept under the carpet.
