After conceding the three-match T20I series to New Zealand, Sri Lanka captain Lasith Malinga said losing does not matter as long as his team shows character. Malinga’s comments came after Sri Lanka lost their fourth consecutive T20I series.
“We tried our best. All the youngsters gave it their all and we had a decent score. We still fought hard but didn’t have the luck in those crucial moments. Glad with the brand of cricket we’ve played and this is how I want the team to play going forward,” ICC quoted Malinga as saying.
Malinga, interestingly, is yet to win a game in his second stint as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain. But the experienced pacer stressed on giving freedom to the youngsters without pondering much on the results.
“We want to give freedom to youngsters to play their natural game, they’re learning how to play T20s, and I want young players to show they’re made for international cricket. Losing doesn’t matter as long as the team shows character. Of course, we want to win [the final game] but also want to test our bench strength,” the pacer added.
Sri Lanka, which had set a target of 162 runs, lost to the Kiwis by four wickets on Tuesday.
With this win, New Zealand has clinched the three-match T20I series having beaten Sri Lanka in the first T20I on September 1. The two sides will play the third T20I on September 6.

I do not agree with Malinga. They have not given their best. That's why we lost the match. We are efficient. But not effective. In this competitive world, effectiveness matters a lot.

I think credit to our team for a good fight. All games went to final few balls - that is good. In fact 2nd T20 it was an unfortunate clash and missed catch in last over. The 1st T20 was also becos two missed catches. So improve fielding.

They were all touch and go till final over. So what Malinga says is right.

However, there in more intent from the players on the field. This is team building time for the 20/20 WC. Batsmen will have to turn their ones into twos. Achieve a target score of 180 is the bottom line as bowling is weak. Jayasuriya's effort taking the catch was magnificient. That spoke volumes. OK... its a young team

Malinga's afterthoughts! But such 'carrots' never won matches for us!
