All liquor shops across the country will be closed on December 25 and 26 in view of Christmas and Poya Day, the Excise Department said.
Star-class hotels registered under the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) with valid liquor licenses have been permitted to sell liquor on December 25 so as to facilitate the tourists.
However, all liquor shops across the country including the SLTDA-approved liquor outlets will remain closed on Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day (26).

I don't understand that why we give such publicity on such information! May be early marketing campaign!

What is the point of this closing on these festival days? Festival means people enjoying, consuming liquor is traditionally one of the most common activities all over the world during festivals. In UK, Christmas Day super markets closed, enabling the employees to celebrate with families, but local shops selling alcohol as usual. Poya days acceptable because those days not for celebrating but for religious observance. But Christmas, New Year means completely different categories, someone with backbone must change this utterly ridiculous laws.

Christmas is a day for joyful enjoyment, families friends get together, eat, drink, sing, dance etc; stopping liquor sales is an unwise move, which would boost illicit liquor sales

This is a season of cheer. We need tourist and need to cater to them. Why do we always have short sighted policies? We encourage illicit liquor sales on 25th by closing bars.
Sokrates Sunday, 24 December 2023 08:57 AM
Anyone who wants can buy alcohol on these days, whether legal or illegal, and thereby supports the crime and corrupt politicians behind it. It is high time to abolish the colonial excice laws. These laws have no place in a democratic country and only encourage crime. Then explain this idiotic law to the tourists who want to celebrate Christmas with alcohol and then find themselves standing in front of a locked wine store door. Hail and Merry Christmas

In which country you close liquor sales, perennial ignorant ,blind conventions still followed, no one to rectify it, better ask vaddha community to take decisions, you go to western world, liquor is sold in every shop, without restrictions, none drunken and fallen on the road, life moves smoothly, why not the religious ,and Finance ministers take decisions, separate religion from governance.
Karalasingam Sivalingam Sunday, 24 December 2023 01:14 PM
