Attorney-at-Law and Moratuwa Municipal Council Member Lihini Fernando has criticised the conduct of Members of Parliament who either voted against or failed to support the No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, calling it a “betrayal of public trust.”
The NCM, which was defeated in Parliament by 113 votes to 73 with 38 MPs absent, has sparked outrage from several quarters.
Fernando, voicing concern over what she described as a moral collapse in Sri Lanka’s political leadership, urged those MPs to reflect deeply on their actions—or lack thereof.
“Every MP who voted to defeat the motion today must seriously reflect on their own morality for lacking the courage to take a principled stand and call a spade a spade,” she said.
“Every MP that was absent must ask themselves a hard question: What did they truly stand for?”
Fernando emphasised that the vote went beyond a procedural decision, describing it as symbolic of a “morally bankrupt political culture” that prioritises “power, party loyalty, and personal interest over justice, accountability, and the people’s welfare.”
“When faced with the opportunity to speak for truth, for integrity, and for the people of this country, our elected parliamentarians chose silence or complicity,” she added.
The municipal councillor warned that the failure to act decisively in moments of national reckoning undermines the role of Parliament as the last line of defence against corruption and impunity.
“The failure to take a principled stance, to call out wrongdoing and demand accountability, is not just political negligence; it’s a betrayal of public trust,” Fernando said. “History will remember not just the actions of these parliamentarians, but the inactions—the silence of those who enabled them.”
