Licence of 219 pharmacies suspended: Minister

Colombo, July 25 (Daily Mirror) - The National Medicine Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has suspended the licences of 219 pharmacies in the country by July 18, 2025, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

He told Parliament that the NMRA had received 2,039 applications for renewal of licences for 2024-2025 and that the licences have been renewed only for 1,820 pharmacies.

Responding to a question by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Minister said the licence of 137 pharmacies out of 219 have been suspended due to unavailability of permanent pharmacists.

He said their licence have been suspended until permanent pharmacists are employed.

The Minister said applications for the renewal of licences of 82 pharmacies out of 219 have been rejected due to their failure to meet the guidelines for community pharmacy practices.
