Colombo, January 27 (Daily Mirror) - Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in response to an inquiry about the shortage of red rice and the soaring prices of coconuts by a group of residents in Galle yesterday, said, "Let's wait and see what happens.'
Wickremesinghe was visiting the home of the late veteran journalist Victor Ivan at Katuhempala in Galle last morning, where he met with the late journalist's relatives and expressed his condolences.
The former President said Victor Ivan's passing away was a massive loss, and that he had made a significant contribution to the country.
While at the late journalist's home, a group of residents gathered and raised concerns about the shortage of red rice and the price of coconuts, with some saying a coconut had reached Rs. 200. They claimed it was Ranil Wickremesinghe who gave 10 kilos of red rice last time.
"Sir, you are our hope, and we need you," the residents told Wickremesinghe.
In response, the former President said, "Let's wait and see what happens."

All politicians seek power to do their job but what’s important is the context. Do they want power for personal benefit (e.g. amassing a huge wealth) or doing something good for the country and leaving a legacy? Ranil (and many other UNP leaders in the past) belonged to the latter category. He doesn’t have an offspring to support and it’s heard he is leaving his only house (where he is living now) to his alma mater Royal College. I am not saying he is the only politician in SL like this but it’s not nice to blame someone for something one is not.

Aela, or whatever Learn from someone who is politically knowledgeable of current events if you don't already know. The term NPP does not exist. It resembles a "Budu Saranayi" in front of a truck transporting livestock that had been stolen for meat. A foreign nation provided funding to the JVP in order to establish a communist administration in Sri Lanka. Only JVP's foreign meddling in our elections is to blame, in my opinion. That is now the kid of your people. Enjoy your communist government now. However, don't assume that we are in your position at the same time. The Anura Kumara authoritarianism could not have held power for a week if RW hadn't saved us from bankruptcy. Remember that.

JVP Goebbels have found nice theories (this time with the help of their mate Dudley). As always is the case they are not be blamed for anything. If they take arms it’s in response to government oppression. If they cannot govern the country it’s Ranil’s fault. If they make stupid statements it’s media’s fault. They can keep putting their heads in the sand like this and pretend everything is hunky dory that’s their funeral!

You want answers? Ask Anura and Hiruni Monday, 27 January 2025 09:39 AM
We Sri Lankans are great in raising a person up the Murunga tree. What can Ranil do about the high prices now prevailing in the country? NOTHING. Can he ring a bell and bring the price down? NO. Can Ranil climb the tree and pluck some coconuts for the people? NO. So, why try to to bloat his ego and laugh behind him?

Old UNP Monday, 27 January 2025 09:19 PM
Don't get deceived. Its a Great response by Ranil who knew immediately that this was a staged act to make Vajira Abeygunawardena look good after failing the party miserably in Galle twice in just 4 months. With the SJB return fully on the cards now, Vajira`s cozy seat in the UNP will be taken by a more capable person soon. These elementary puppet shows won’t fool an experienced leader like Ranil who's focus is getting the right people back. His ability to Bring prices down or not is a debatable subject.

As if it was in capable hands before? It’s the very people you voted that ruined this country in the first place. NPP has come with a manifesto to change that. It may not happen overnight but we need to give them time and during the process things might worsen before getting better. You people seriously think that giving RW and Rajapaksa the country back will solve problems? They’ll eat up whatever that’s left of you and this country. When will Sri Lankans ever learn.

Still, your heroes kept Nandalal and Mahinda Siriwardhana to handle finance. They worked under RW. RW signed and declared free from bankruptcy before the end of his term. Remember? Ranil is goo with economy but extremely weak when it comes to analysis, gaining and retaining political power. In 2004 he had a chance to form a government with jhu but waited hoping upfa government will fail and he will gain power easily. A poor judgement and failed. Then he thought MR will fail thr war gaining him power but failed. Then once MY3 gained power and he became pm. He thought he can become president easily next time by his own but failed as he was very unpopular at that time. Now he thinks AKD may fail similar to Gota and he will gain power easily. It will not happen this time as AKD has a better brain than Gota though AKD is a big liar. Lol

Our Meeharak know no bounds to their stupidity. Admittedly, the performance of NPP ministers has been uninspiritational to say the least. The much awaited dynamic transformation and efficient functioning of government departments remains a pipedream. Any processing of documents expediently still requires the mandatory bribe. The legal deterents in the form of more drastic penalties has not been forthcoming. The police still require "incentives" to perform basic tasks. The University of Peradeniya confered academic titles apparently don't endow the recipients with basic common-sense. But having said all that, the government we have now is a damn sign better than the one we had before.

Actually when you analyse the statement all what he said was Give some more time to the Govt. The coconut shortage is seasonal happens every year. Rice by next season NPP is promising to resolve, This season they have not got it a bit messed up but lets wait. What many are not aware is RW wants AKD to succeed as he does not want SJB/Sajith P to succeed. Besides he knows as long as NPP follows the IMF agreement no one should complain against them. And a major advantage we now have in the country is there are no powerfully organised Trade Unions that can disrupt the NPP govt. One good thing that has happened as a majority voted for the NPP.

Rice, coconuts, salt, shortages. These are basic commodities found here, chances are they are inherited problems Could someone in authority (in govt) analyse and give some answers.Problem, solution, action to be taken, both short and long term . Then monitor and report(issue statements on progress to the public periodically) so that we get the basics right and issues are not forgotten

Yesterday I watched a very illuminating interview with Prof Buddhi Marambe on the current rice and coconut crisis. Then only I knew RW also imported rice in Jan 2024 foreseeing possible shortages (with import duties reduced to Rs. 1.00 from the existing Rs. 65.00) for a limited period of 20 days. No one noticed this because it happened well in advance (according to Prof. Marambe the duty reduction should have been less but that’s a detail) That’s how professional governments act!

Even RW said to" wait and see " to his very very few followers , may be in good faith , majority Sri Lankans are not believing his statement because in the past he had several failed intentions to come to the power from the back door , but only he got a chance to be in power for less than two years as a defecto to GOTABAYA due to the economic failures , that RW also responsible as a politician who spend more than 45 years in previous parliaments until majority Sri Lankans rejected him for ever .
