Colombo, March 11 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka reports around 13,000 cases of leptospirosis (rat fever) within a year, with nearly 300 deaths recorded, according to the Health Promotion Bureau.

Consultant Epidemiologist Dr. Thushani Dabarera noted that Sri Lanka ranks among the countries with the second-highest number of reported leptospirosis cases.

According to the bureau, about 1,800 cases have been reported so far in 2026. In 2025, nearly 200 deaths were reported due to the disease.

Experts urge that symptoms such as high fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain and red eyes should not be ignored and advise the public to seek medical attention promptly to prevent complications.

Dr. Dabarera said that rat fever bacteria enter the body through cuts, broken skin or mucous membranes when people are exposed to water or soil contaminated with infected animal urine.

The highest number of cases has been reported from several districts including Ratnapura, Galle, Kegalle, Kalutara, Monaragala and Matara.

Health authorities have warned that people living and working in high-risk areas, particularly those involved in agricultural activities, should take necessary preventive measures and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
