Leave of CEB employees cancelled until further notice

Colombo, Sept. 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has cancelled the leave of all its employees with immediate effect until further notice, according to a written directive issued by the General Manager.

The move follows an Extraordinary Gazette Notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 21, declaring all services related to the supply of electricity as essential.

The Gazette was issued under Section 2 of the Essential Public Services Act, No. 61 of 1979, granting the President authority to declare certain services as essential to ensure continuity.

It states that the decision was taken considering electricity supply as vital for maintaining normal public life, and that any disruption could cause obstruction or hindrance to those services.

Predecessors except Kanchana did nothing to restructure and make it efficient, except get together and steal. Anti national acts like sabotaging an essential service warrants immediate arrest, detention and prosecution. One gets the feeling that this government has been too lax with dealing with these miscreants by giving into too many demands. Very unfair as other government workers are much worse off than these outlaws.

Do not drive the employees on to a dead end. The the example of such situations before this govt. needs your attention ; which granted employees their democratic rights without stifling them. While talking of workers rights you'll in fear deprive the rights of workers' by such actions. Roll back to the 1996 era of the last CEB trade union action. Can you guess who started the strike which started in the afternoon and went on for a 4 day blackout. Of course memory will be short- Power was restored only because Ratwatta [who was the minister] very gentlemanly appealed to the generation team [ on the 4th day night ] that the next day is Poson- it will reflect badly on him, which made the Generation team to immediately bypass union officials and to restore supply. After all the employees are not inhuman if approached in a more human fashion The employees were not having essential service. leave cancellation orders etc enacted hanging over their heads.
