Lawyers in Jaffna launch strike in protest against police action

Colombo, Oct. 7 (Daily Mirror) - Lawyers in Jaffna staged a strike today (Tuesday) in protest against the police, accusing them of unlawfully entering and searching the home of a lawyer without any court authorization.

The incident occurred amid ongoing police investigations against several lawyers allegedly involved in land deed fraud in Jaffna. On Sunday, police officers reportedly entered the residence of one such lawyer — accused of land fraud — with the intention of arresting him, and carried out a search operation inside the house.

However, the police have been accused of conducting the search without obtaining prior approval or a warrant from the court.

In response, lawyers held protest demonstrations in front of the courts condemning the police’s actions.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that lawyers facing allegations related to land fraud are expected to file anticipatory bail applications in court tomorrow (Wednesday) to prevent potential arrests by the police.

These lawyers have to be investigated, land fraud is rampant, even if the police had made a slip it is nothing compared to robbing others land by lawyers,

Strike action by the Black coat profession is a rare sight. What they should do is take the issue on a FR application to SC for Police excesses on this occasion and the victims lawyer/s not treated as per the Constitutional provisions and other legal provisions

The lawyers acted fradulently in land sale during LTTE was in power in Jaffna. I have had perrsonal experience. I am happy they are being taken to task.

Lawyers are involved in land frauds, most probably trying to claim lands left by those who migrated to other countries, they are defrauding their own people. The courts may not be independent too as tge judges are also former lawyers and they have tight connections.

There is no doubt land deed fraud in Jaffna; but this is country wide. One of the characters of Sri Lankans. Police being police, who are not reasonably well educated, do not want to follow the procedures and give resect to others. Lawyers rather than striking should go to courts against IGP for their poor action.
