Colombo, Feb 13 (Daily Mirror) - The Attorney General has informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court that the decision to discharge three suspects related to the abduction of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickremetunge's driver has been temporarily suspended.

This suspension will remain in effect until the Attorney General reviews the latest summary of evidence report submitted by the CID on Monday (10) and makes an appropriate decision.

However, the Attorney General's Department has categorically stated that the Attorney General has not withdrawn the advice letter sent to the CID on January 27, 2025.

Ranjith T must not blame NPP. AG was appointed recently by Ranil disregarding the more senior officer. Why he did that is best known to him. Many senior positions in the Public service are held by Officers appointed by tha last gocernment/s. Some of them may be more favourable to the past Presidents. NPP leader AKD must be given time to get things to move smoothly

The JVP-NPP that pledged to uphold the rule of law and allow independent institutions to function without interferences is now influencing them brazenly and in a grand scale. The AG was summoned by the President and questioned. How could this have happened? These independent institutions were created to allow professionals to make decisions and exercise their duties independently without fear and intimidation from the political establishment. If this happened under an UNP or SLPP regime, these JVP guys would have played havoc in the country by instigating protest campaigns throughout the country. We are in an era far worse than the past 76 years now. People, brace for a Noth Korean style dictatorship. Well-done voters!

Has the AG erred in his previous decision to release the three suspects? AG's position is crucial for judiciary and therefore this type of behaviour is unacceptable. Further International community will also lose confidence in Sri Lanka. I would encourage AG to resign.

What Attorney General should do is what is legally right; Not what is popular; If what he decided and recommended first i.e to discharge suspects is legally right, what he has done is now is wrong. If what he did was legally wrong in the first place, he must resign now.

It is clear there is a lot of incompetence in the judicial system in Sri Lanka. It is a fact, the complete Judiciary and AG's department worked like a fish market to the Politicians. That is why we have world record for unsolved criminal cases in Asia.
