Lankan nabbed at airport with latest mobile phones worth over Rs. 100 million

Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - A Sri Lankan passenger was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with latest mobile phones worth more than Rs. 100 million while attempting to smuggle them into the country.

The suspect and the stock of mobile phones were taken into custody by Customs officers this morning.

The 32-year-old suspect is a resident of the Kaththankudi area in Batticaloa.

He had previously worked as a hotel employee in several Middle Eastern countries and has now been identified by Customs officials as a smuggler involved in bringing various goods into the country through similar means.

He arrived at the BIA from Dubai today at 6:30 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-226.

Customs officers discovered a total of 528 mobile phones in the three pieces of luggage he had brought.

The stock included high-end models such as Apple iPhones, Samsung, Google Pixel and Redmi devices, each worth over Rs. 500,000.

Airport Customs officers have detained the passenger and are conducting further investigations.
