LG polls to be held as scheduled: EC Chief

Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - The National Election Commission confirmed that the 2025 Local Government Elections will be held as planned on May 6, despite ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the rejection of nomination papers.

Speaking at a media conference in Colombo today, Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake assured the public that election preparations are moving forward, while also emphasising the Commission’s commitment to respecting court decisions.

“We will proceed in line with the rulings issued by the courts,” Rathnayake said, referring to a number of petitions filed by political parties and independent groups over the rejection of their nominations.

Rathnayake also noted that the printing of polling cards and ballot papers has already begun for areas unaffected by legal disputes.

Earlier in the day, the Court of Appeal ordered election officials to accept nearly 37 nomination papers that had previously been rejected. The decision was issued by a two-judge bench comprising Acting Court of Appeal President Justice Mohammed Thahir Laffar and Justice K.P. Fernando.

The ruling came after court reviewed the writ applications filed by various parties, including the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance, and several independent groups. The rejected nominations had pertained to several local government bodies, including the Colombo Municipal Council.
